TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- The Oklahoma Insurance Department says nearly 76,000 claims have been filed since a series of violent tornadoes hit Oklahoma last month, killing dozens and injuring hundreds.

Insurance Commissioner John Doak said Wednesday insurance payments from the storms are nearing $688 million.

Doak's office says that while claim filings are slowing down after the storms, they're "nowhere near complete."

Doak says most policies allow for claims to be turned in up to one year from the date of loss.

Two of last month's tornadoes were top-of-the-scale EF5s. A storm on May 20 at Moore had 210 mph winds, and one at El Reno 11 days later had 295 mph winds.

Beginning next month, the Insurance Department will host several disaster insurance forums to help people with insurance-related issues, including filing complaints.
